Job Action Committee Meeting
September 06, 2007
Present: Peter, Chris, Pauline, Alexis, Jane, Hank, Gordon, Cynthia, Nita, Rita, Anne
Joint Operations with Vancouver School Board Met with principals.
Teachers are respecting our picket lines.
- This week there will be no use of the libraries in schools.
- The official ruling is that students and teachers can go in and use the libraries but they are not doing so at this time.
- VSB teacher librarians and library assistants are doing work outside of the libraries.
- Access to libraries and schools is possible without having to cross picket lines.
- Currently no use of books or materials from school libraries.
- Pickets at joint sites have changed and updates are available on the blog.
- CUPE 391 now has members at picket line at Strathcona and this will probably become a regular site for 391
- Currently the pickets are for 4 hours in the mornings
- Judi Walker and Ann Martin are coordinating
Benefit Concert Help to make sure there is a good turn-out at the benefit this Saturday, September 8th
- Share information on picket lines and distribute info to family, friends, etc.
Picket Site Updates Schedules seem to be working out well
- Pickets have resumed at Champlain and there has been good numbers
- They are doing picketing from 9-1 and longer if enough people are interested in staying
- MPL has smaller numbers due to some of our members going back to school. Picket captains at the site will monitor and so long as there is interest and enough people, pickets will continue Monday and Tuesday, 9-1
- BBQs are now happening at all sites as part of the weekly activities
Suggestions Suggestions were reviewed by the committee
- All suggestions and responses will be added to the blog
"Upping the Ante" Members are looking to do more to get more attention from the media and the public Suggestions include a sit-in
The committee decided to add some new action to activities this Friday
There will be a puppet show at 11am followed by the BBQ starting just before noon
At 1:00 there will be a crew talk and immediately afterwards we will form a solid line of people around the edge of the plaza facing out to the street and the public
We will then make a "human sign reading TALK!
A photo will be taken from the Federal tower
Conclude with grandeur on Georgia
Next Tuesday we will all write haikus and they will all be sent to newspaper editors
There will also be a t-shirt slogan contest
T-shirts will be available to all members and a donation can be made by those members who can afford it
T-shirts will also be available for sale to the public as a fundraiser
Roundtable We need to ensure both information tables at CEN are staffed at all times When on duty as picket captain, check the schedules and ask people picketing to consider filling available slots
Remind people working at the registration desk to ask people to sign up for registration desk shifts when they are signing in
There will be another Job Action Committee Meeting next Thursday at 9am at the Union Office.
